The floor people notice when they walk in

A straight-laid floor disappears into a room. A herringbone or chevron floor is the room. It is the finish that designers reach for, and it is where an installer's skill is on show in every join.

Chevron in particular reads as luxury: planks mitred so the ends meet in a continuous V, running the length of the room in unbroken arrows. Herringbone is the classic parquetry flooring look, warmer and a little more relaxed. Both are laid from the centre of the room so the pattern lands square on your walls, and both are priced on the craft, not on a discount.

The pattern is a choice on top of the material

Herringbone and chevron are laying styles, not materials. Engineered timber, SPC hybrid and vinyl all come as pattern planks, so you choose the material for how the floor needs to perform, then choose the pattern for the look. We bring samples of both patterns in each material to the measure.

Timber gives the richest result and can be re-coated for decades. Hybrid gives you the pattern in a waterproof, family-proof floor. Vinyl gets you the designer look on the tightest budget.

Herringbone vs chevron

Two patterns, one difference: how the ends are cut

Look at where the planks meet. That is the whole difference, and it changes the look, the labour and the price.

Herringbone flooring installed through a living room with fireplace and tall windows

Herringbone flooring

Rectangular planks with square ends, laid at a right angle to each other in a staggered zigzag. Each plank's end sits against the side of the next. The classic herringbone wood floor look, with a broken, woven texture. Less waste and a little less labour than chevron.

Chevron flooring

Planks cut at an angle, usually 45 degrees, so the ends meet in a clean point and the rows form a continuous V. Sharper, more formal, and it makes a room look longer. Chevron costs more to cut and lay, and it is the more premium finish.

Questions we get asked

Pattern flooring questions, answered straight

Herringbone or chevron, which should I choose?

Herringbone is the classic, warmer look with a woven texture, and it suits most homes. Chevron is sharper and more formal, and it visually lengthens a room. If you want the floor to be the feature and the budget allows, chevron. If you want the pattern look without the top-end price, herringbone.

How much more does pattern flooring cost than a straight lay?

More, and honestly so: pattern planks cost more than straight boards, there is more cutting and more waste, and the set-out takes time. Chevron costs more than herringbone. We price the pattern labour up front in the quote so there are no surprises.

Which materials can be laid in herringbone or chevron?

All three we install. Engineered oak herringbone flooring and chevron engineered wood flooring at the premium end, herringbone hybrid flooring for a waterproof family floor, and herringbone vinyl flooring for the designer look on a budget.

How much longer does a pattern install take?

Roughly twice as long as a straight lay for the same room, because every plank is cut and placed to the pattern and the set-out has to be right before the first plank goes down. A typical living area is two to three days.

Does herringbone suit smaller rooms?

Yes. A smaller-format herringbone plank in a lighter tone makes a small room feel busier in a good way, and chevron can make a narrow hallway feel longer. We bring samples to the measure so you can see the scale in your own room.
