Hybrid vs vinyl
They look similar in a photo. They are not the same floor.
People get this wrong every week, and some flooring companies let them. SPC hybrid is a rigid plank with a stone-composite core. Vinyl plank, also sold as LVP or LVT, is a flexible plank. Same plain-English comparison we give at every measure:

SPC hybrid flooring

Waterproof hybrid flooring is the floor we install more than any other, and for good reason: it does the job of timber in a house that actually gets lived in.
SPC hybrid flooring has a rigid stone-composite core, so it will not swell, cup or dent the way softer floors can. It clicks together over most subfloors, runs straight through kitchens and laundries without a join, and shrugs off Queensland heat. Hybrid timber flooring looks convincingly like oak or blackbutt, at a fraction of the price.

Hybrid, not just thick vinyl
The name confuses people. Hybrid is called hybrid because it borrows from laminate (a rigid core and a click join) and from vinyl (a printed, waterproof surface). The core is the difference. Bend a hybrid plank and it will not give. That rigidity is why it bridges small subfloor dips, resists dents and stays flat in the sun.
When we would talk you out of it
If the room is a quiet bedroom, the budget is tight, and the subfloor is already flat, vinyl plank will feel softer underfoot for less money. We will tell you that at the measure rather than sell you the dearer floor.
Vinyl plank and LVP flooring

Luxury vinyl plank is the softer, quieter, most affordable plank floor we install, and in the right room it is the smarter choice.
Vinyl plank flooring, sold as luxury vinyl plank, LVP or LVT, is a flexible plank with a printed timber or stone look and a protective wear layer. It is thin, so it adds almost no height at doors, it is warm and quiet to walk on, and it is the easiest floor on the budget. It does want a flat subfloor, which is exactly what our vinyl flooring installation starts with.

Where vinyl is the right call
Rentals, bedrooms, home offices, granny flats and any room where a soft, quiet floor and a sharp price matter more than heavy-duty toughness. It is also the floor to pick when door clearances are tight, because it is the thinnest plank there is.
Where we would steer you to hybrid instead
Laundries and bathrooms, hot west-facing living rooms, a house full of heavy furniture, or a subfloor that is not flat and that you would rather not pay to level. In those rooms hybrid saves you money later.

Questions we get asked
Hybrid vs vinyl, the questions we hear most
Is hybrid just thick vinyl?
No. Vinyl plank is flexible PVC all the way through. Hybrid has a rigid stone plastic composite core with a printed wear layer on top. The rigid core is what makes hybrid dent resistant, stable in heat, and forgiving over a slightly uneven subfloor. They are different products at different prices.
Which is more waterproof?
SPC hybrid. The plank and the click joins are both waterproof, so it runs straight through kitchens, laundries and bathrooms. Vinyl plank is water resistant, but the joins and edges are the weak point if water sits on it.
Which is better with pets and kids?
Hybrid. It resists dents from dropped toys and scratches from claws better than vinyl, and spills are not a worry. Vinyl is softer, which is nicer underfoot but marks more easily.
What is the price difference?
Vinyl plank is the most affordable plank floor we install. Hybrid sits above it, and both are well under engineered timber. The subfloor matters too: vinyl needs a flatter subfloor, so a bumpy slab can close the gap once levelling is priced in. We give you both prices after a free in-home measure.
Which lasts longer?
In a busy home, hybrid. Its rigid core and thicker wear layer take more punishment. In a quiet bedroom or study, a good vinyl plank will last for years and feel softer doing it.
Can either be laid in herringbone?
Yes, both. Herringbone hybrid flooring and herringbone vinyl flooring come as purpose-made pattern planks. It costs more in labour than a straight lay, but it is the most affordable way to get the designer pattern look. See our herringbone and chevron page for the detail.
